Theatre manager Sharon decided to take a well-earned week off from work, while it's quiet, and asked me to step into her wellies, wade in and write this column.

I’ve been volunteering here for about 18 months but only joined the staff as theatre administrator at the end of June, so I’m still finding my feet to some extent but enjoying every moment of this rewarding job.

At the time of writing, the Quay is in it’s second ‘dark week’ – no performances and lots of maintenance.

And although I haven’t been here for very long, I can tell you it feels very strange without the usual throng of people that ebb and flow through the building, giving it the life and vibrancy we are used to.

So we are all looking forward with great anticipation to the fantastic array of shows that Sharon has managed to line up for us in the last quarter of this year.

September has some cracking films and shows, as usual, but the biggest fish we landed was the legendary Nicholas Parsons himself with his one-man performance ‘Just a Laugh a Minute’ on Thursday, September 20.

Nicholas is very well known as host to the long-standing Radio 4 show ‘Just a Minute’, as well as roles in The Rocky Horror Show, the Benny Hill Show, and host of Sale of the Century.

With his wit still razor sharp, this show has been described as “superb stand-up comedy, extravagant, vibrant and funny”.

And, with an almost full house, we are looking forward to being thoroughly entertained.

Beginning Tuesday, September 11 through to the following Saturday we have Sudbury Dramatic Society putting on ‘Make Way for Lucia’, by John Van Druten.

Based on EF Benson’s hilarious novels set the small town of Tilling, the arrival of Lucia marks the drawing of battle lines, as the war for social supremacy begins.

And don’t forget the action doesn’t all happen on the stage.

The bar has regular monthly events; the Quiz, Quay Acoustic and the Open Music Night.

Come and join us in the convivial atmosphere of our lovely riverside bar.
