A Sudbury nursery which opened its doors with just five children on its books has now celebrated its 18th birthday.

Since then more than 2,000 children have now been cared for by Woodpeckers Private Nursery, based in Melford Road.

It is run by Deidre and Jeff Micklewright, and Deirdre said: “We love to hear from our children when they come back for a visit and tell their stories.

“We’ve often had former pupils coming on work experience placements. We’re very proud of the wonderful young adults they have become and we feel privileged that we have played a part in their early lives.”

Woodpeckers was one of the first nurseries in the area to introduce Forest Schools for the children to enjoy, learn and play through nature.

Last summer they partnered with the Community Wardens to do Litter Picks around Sudbury, from which they learned to appreciate and respect the environment.

Other highlights have included meeting residents of Devonshire House Care Home in Cavendish, with the children organising music for both generations to enjoy.

The nursery now plans to get its Hygge Qualification as well as continuing to offer French lessons, music, dance and play and learning through nature.
